In The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator, God, almost certainly does not exist, and that belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion, which he defines as a persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictory evidence. He is sympathetic to Robert Pirsig's statement in Lila (1991) that "when one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion."[3] With many examples, he explains that one does not need religion to be moral and that the roots of religion and of morality can be explained in non-religious terms.

In early December 2006, it reached number four in the New York Times Hardcover Non-Fiction Best Seller list after nine weeks on the list.[4] More than three million copies were sold.[5]According to Dawkins in a 2016 interview with Matt Dillahunty, an unauthorised Arabic translation of this book has been downloaded 3 million times in Saudi Arabia.[6] The book has attracted widespread commentary, with many books written in response.
RichardDawkins has expressed plans to make his bestselling book, "The GodDelusion," available for free in Islamic countries due to the surge ofillegal downloads of the book in Middle Eastern countries. The famedatheist has said that he was "greatly encouraged" to learn that therehad been 13 million downloads of the unofficial Arabic .pdf version of thebook. He is now translating several of his books, including "The GodDelusion," into Arabic, Urdu, Farsi and Indonesian in response to what hecalled the "stirring towards atheism" in Islamic countries."We arechoosing languages, not countries," Dawkins said, according to The Guardian. "The pdfs may, of course, be downloaded byanybody in any country, but we imagine most Urdu downloads will be in Pakistan, most Indonesian downloads in Indonesia and Malaysia, and most Farsi downloadsin Iran," he added."The GodDelusion," which has sold 3.3 million copies worldwide, argues that asupernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that a belief in apersonal god should qualify as a delusion. The atheist author alsocontended in the book that religion is not a requirement for living ameaningful life. While Dawkins isknown for being a critic of all religions, he has been especially vocal in his criticism of Islam, calling it"the most evil religion in the world.""[O]fcourse that doesn't mean all Muslims are evil, very far from it. IndividualMuslims suffer more from Islam than anyone else," the author explained. In 2017, Dawkinscalled out California radio station KPFA Radio in Berkeley after it canceled anevent with him due to his remarks against Islam. He noted that he is also knownto be a frequent critic of Christianity but he has never been"de-platformed" for that. "Why do you give Islam a free pass? Why is it fine to criticise Christianity but not Islam?" he asked.Dawkins notedthat the Washington DC-based Center for Inquiry (CFI), which recently mergedwith the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, had decided on a"more systematic programme" of translating his work in ebook form. The first bookthat will be translated would be Dawkins' shortest book "River Out ofEden: A Darwinian View of Life," which focuses on evolution. The CFI willno longer work on books that already have legitimately published translations. The organization is hoping that the new versions will be made available on itswebsite by the end of the year.
34. Whole countries and nations where religion and the Christian life were formerly flourishing and capable of fostering a viable and working community of faith, are now put to a hard test, and in some cases, are even undergoing a radical transformation, as a result of a constant spreading of an indifference to religion, of secularism and atheism. This particularly concerns countries and nations of the so-called First World, in which economic well-being and consumerism, even if coexistent with a tragic situation of poverty and misery, inspires and sustains a life lived "as if God did not exist". This indifference to religion and the practice of religion devoid of true meaning in the face of life's very serious problems, are not less worrying and upsetting when compared with declared atheism. Sometimes the Christian faith as well, while maintaining some of the externals of its tradition and rituals, tends to be separated from those moments of human existence which have the most significance, such as, birth, suffering and death. In such cases, the questions and formidable enigmas posed by these situations, if remaining without responses, expose contemporary people to an inconsolable delusion or to the temptation of eliminating the truly humanizing dimension of life implicit in these problems.
There is no true or whole gospel, and no authentic biblical mission, without the Person, work and power of the Holy Spirit. We pray for a greater awakening to this biblical truth, and for its experience to be reality in all parts of the worldwide body of Christ. However, we are aware of the many abuses that masquerade under the name of the Holy Spirit, the many ways in which all kinds of phenomena are practised and praised which are not the gifts of the Holy Spirit as clearly taught in the New Testament. There is great need for more profound discernment, for clear warnings against delusion, for the exposure of fraudulent and self-serving manipulators who abuse spiritual power for their own ungodly enrichment. Above all there is a great need for sustained biblical teaching and preaching, soaked in humble prayer, that will equip ordinary believers to understand and rejoice in the true gospel and to recognize and reject false gospels.
